Weavers Now On Right Track After a shaky beginning, during which time there has been some jug- ghng of the lineup, the Weavers Softball team seems to be arriving as a first class outfit. At this writing, they have won 3 a'\d ^ost 3 games. Vernon Johnson was clccted man ager and feels that he is now getting his lineup in good ruTming order. Samuels —- P The balance of the squad consists of Jones, a catcher; Young, shortstop; Dub Stroud and Wright. Dallas Browai has six circuit blows to his credit so far. R. J. Beane has been the most consistent hitter. After a see-saw opener with the War Department in whicli the Weav ers were beaten 26-23, they bounced back in the second league game with Amos to win 15-5. llie third game was lost to Diamond 8-7 followed by a win, one with Jr. Order, 6-5. In the first league game with Ilillcrest the Weavers were taken 7-4 after leading throughout most of the game. In the second game with the War Depart ment, behind no hit pitching of Red Samuels, they won 12-2 showing plen ty of power and good defense. Manager Johnson said recently that "from now on our opponents can ex pect plenty of trouble. We have two fine pitchers in Red Samuels and Cardin and have R. J. Beane to use on the mound if necessary.” Don’t forget tliat all league games are played Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 and the schedule is posted on the bulletin boards. • Stars and Stripes, soldier newspaper in the Mediterranean Theater, has sold more than 30,000 copies of “Puptent Poets,” a collec tion of poetr)’ submitted to the paper by O. I. s. HILLCREST GIRLS LEAD LOCAL INDUS I RIAL LEAGUE The Hillcrest Girls Softball Team, defending their 1944 championship, has opened the season by winning the first three games. To date only three runs have been scored against the Ilill crest team with the girls scoring 19 runs on their opponents. Although the season has just begun, the Hillcrest girls have made an excellent showing and should be at)lc to come out on top in the 1945 playoff. In the opening game Hillcrest won over Thomas Hosiery’ Mills by a score of 2-1. In the second game with the War Department the score was 12-0 in favor of the Hillcrest girls attrilnited to the outstanding pitching of Minnie Brown, who was voted the most out standing girls’ softball player in the City of High Point last year. I'he third game of the season Hill crest was victorious o\er the Marsli Furniture girls by the score of 5-2. Again Minnie Brown pitched an out standing game. In addition to Minnie, Mary Lou Pierce, Delphine Thornton, and Mary Edith Surratt, who were se lected on the all state team last year. IIILLCRESr SOFIBALL TEAMS rO 1 RAVEL TO FOR r BRAGG On Sunday, June 17, both the boys and girls softball teams at Ilillcrest will travel down to Fort Bragg. There will ])c a double header beginning at 3:15 when the Hillcrest girls take on the Fort Bragg WAC’s and the boys play a team I’ort Bragg. Both Hi11«'st teams will be trying to maintain tec good record that they have establisl)cd so far this season. After til ^"ues, the teams arc to be guests ofriv Fort Bragg teams at supper. The Criminal Investigation Division of the Mediterranean 'I'heater of Operations investi gated 4,987 alleged crimes against the gov ernment and recovered $1,585,141 worth of U. S. property during 1944. are again showing good form this sea son. l*’i\e teams are entered in the girls league with games being played at the local Post Office lot every day during the week except Saturdays and Sun days. Game time is 6 p.m., and sched ules are posted on the plant bulletin board. Let’s all come out and cheer the team on to another successful season. IIILLCRESr BOYS SOFFBALL I’EAM riED FOR I'OP PLACE IN LOCAL LEAGUE As the Point-Crest goes to press the Hillcrest Boys Softball Team is tied with the War Department for the top position in the local industrial league. This is tlie first year that the Hillcrest boys ha\e entered a team in the league and to date hav'C made an e.xcellent showing, winning four out of five games pla)cd. The opening game with Amos Hos iery v\as lost by a 6-7 score after play ing eight innings. 'I'he other games were played with l^iamond Full- I'ashioned, War Department, Junior Order, and High Point Weaving in the Hillcrest boys favor. 'I’he Hillcrest team lias scored 52 runs in the five games as compared to their opponents 23 runs. 'I’he l)oys games are played everv' Alonday and Wednesday at 6 P. M.
